Follower Feature #5

Here is Follower Feature #5!

I am highlighting just one follower this time, and that is Jennifer from Herding Kats In Kindergarten.

Tell us a little about yourself. What do you like to do in your free time? What grade/subject do you teach? Details, details, details!!

I teach kindergarten/1st grade - I taught Kinder for my first two years, then a year of 1st grade and right now it's up in the air as to what grade I'm teaching! It all depends on the numbers, could be kinder, 1st or 2nd! I am hoping and praying for Kinder, but I'll be accepting of 1st again. If it's 2nd grade, you may find me in the loony bin - not sure I can tackle yet another grade and set of standards!

I am an Army wife and have 4 children, so there isn't a whole lot of free time. The time that I do have is spent either creating materials for my classroom, watching Glee or reading. Or, reading WHILE watching Glee or making materials for my class. I find it very hard to concentrate on just one thing at a time, so I'm usually multi-tasking!

Why did you decide to become a teacher blogger?

I fell in love with reading blogs last year - it was so neat to see what was going on in other classrooms and there were so many great resources being shared. I decided to start my own blog because I wanted to share and give back, as well as reach out and make new friends. I've had a blast in the year that I've been blogging - and met some really great people!

When I visit your blog what will I find? (What do you like to blog about?)

Honestly, it's a hodgepodge of events of my day, ideas I've had, what worked (or didn't!) in my classroom and items I've made. I'm a big proponent of play, so I have a series on center time that I try to get up every Friday. You'll also find pictures of hands on activities - I usually use my own kids as guinea pigs before I try things out in class, so my youngest two boys show up quite frequently.

What inspires you?

I teach in a Title I school and I know my kiddos come from very tough situations. That inspires me to try harder because I know I can be the difference that they need. I also read Ron Clark's book "The End of Molasses Classes" last year and LOVED it! One of my biggest wishes is to get a chance to visit The Ron Clark Academy!

What are three professional resources you can't live without?

My Smartboard - but actually I will have to live without that for a little while as my new classroom doesn't have one installed yet. There's a work order in for it, but we all know how long THAT can take!

My music - Jack Hartmann, Stephen Fite, Dr. Jean and Have Fun Teaching are my top faves. I love my youtube playlists!

Books! I love reading myself, and I love reading aloud to my class even more! I try to incorporate books into each center in my classroom. I buy books like other people buy shoes - compulsively! Quality children's literature just makes my day and I couldn't get through a day of teaching without getting out a good book (Mo Willems, Judy Schachner, Anna Dewdney, Eric Litwin and Laura Numeroff are my top 5 favorite authors!) One day I might share a photo of my bedroom closet where my rubbermaid bins of books are stored (neatly organized). It's a good thing it's a walk-in closet or we might have to devote one of the bedrooms to books!

Please head on over to visit her blog and give her some comment love!
