100 Minutes and The Daily 5...Joining Together!

Thinking of Teaching

In my first post about the upcoming 100 Minutes Book Study I mentioned my desire to read this book because in the past I haven't been able to work The Daily 5 structure effectively into my own language program.

Wow...did I get a lot of comments from other bloggers/teachers that feel the same way!

There is definitely a LOVE for The Daily 5 out there but like all things, it's not a one size fits all and it seems like there is a group of us that just can't get it to work with our teaching style.

Does that mean we just just throw it all away?

Give it up?

Start from scratch?

No way!

Lisa Donohue, the author of 100 Minutes, has a great blog post on her blog that address this exact concern.

If you are on the fence about whether this book is for you, or whether you want to join in on the book study I highly recommend checking out Lisa's post.

Lisa talks about connecting the strong independent activities and routines that are built using the Daily 5 structure with whole class and larger group activities, like Guided Reading or Writer's Workshop. She has come up with an acronym for this- AWARD time (Applying Writing and Reading Daily) and there is an entire section in her book about it.

Another great feature of Lisa's blog post is the diagrams that illustrate the reading and writing cycle that can take place in a literacy block. There is also a chart that shows how the 100 minutes of your literacy block can be divided and where The Daily 5 fits.

100 Minutes and The Daily 5...a perfect match!

I'm planning to conduct an interview with Lisa Donohue to start the book study so if you have any questions you'd like me to ask please let me know.

Book of the Week/Daily 5 Update (Freebie)

As I have mentioned before I am trying to integrate The Power of Retelling into my Daily 5 (or Literacy Workshop) program. So far we are just in the guided retelling stage and things are moving slowly but I am really happy with how things are going. We hit a small snag this week and won't be doing a "Book of the Week" for the first time since the school year started but I am feeling okay about it.

We are up to 17 minutes of stamina in Read to Self!!! I am sooo excited about how well things are going. I think that quite a few of my Grade 3 friends need some help choosing books that are a good fit but all things in good time right? Plus my class LOVES Read to Self so that is a huge bonus. I was even able to get a few reading assessments done today as I am hoping to start guided reading asap!

We have also started to do Working on Writing and are up to 5 minutes for our stamina. I think my class can do more but I also know how important it is not to rush things. We have been working on procedural writing separately from Work on Writing and my class needs A LOT of work on how to complete a task effectively in pairs so right now that is taking some precedence over building our stamina too quickly.

Here's a quick freebie of some of the things we have been doing for procedural writing.

I am quite happy with how things are progressing in my Literacy program and hope things continue to go as planned!!

Now, to talk about my Book of the Week program.

This is how I have organized the front blackboard of my classroom according to my reading of The Power of Retelling by Vicki Benson. Each week I pick a picture book (so far- it could be non-fiction or non-continuous texts as well) and we work through the book together over the course of the week.

On Monday we make predications based first on just the title and then on the title and the cover photo. You can see a line on the board to show where we made predictions after we could see the cover.

We also look at vocabulary on Monday. Sometimes I give the students a list of words that I think are important from the book, as you can see- they are the three words above the line. Below the line are the words the students predicted might be in the text based on the predictions they made on what the text might be about...whoa, that's a lot of predicting!!

It's very interesting to hear the reasons behind why the students are making their predictions. :)

On Tuesday, we read the book together and do a variety of activities to show our understanding of the book. So far we have just been working on things we have noticed in the book.  For this particular book I also asked my students to list the actions that made Tacky different than the other penguins (in the book Tacky the Penguin) because I am working up to talking about character traits and the evidence we can use to show that a character has a specific trait.

On Thursday we have been working on our interpretations.  In this case we looked at the list of actions Tacky did that made him different and what it told us about him. I was very happy with how my students were able to think really deeply during this activity and used their schema effectively.

On Friday we retell the story. Our end goal is for students to be able to write their own retell but obviously in the first weeks of school that is just not happening. During this week I copied some of the pictures from the book and the students and I worked through an illustrated retell orally.

I think I am close to being able to move on from a Guided Retell to a Story Map Retell and am very excited about my student's progress. Word Work is next on the list for our Literacy Workshop as well as getting Guided Reading up and going.

Isn't it nice when things are chugging along?

Literacy Workshop/Daily 5 (Freebie)

Last year I incorporated The Daily 5 into my classroom for the first time and really enjoyed the freedom of choice it gave to my students. They became such independent little workers in all areas of their studies and I think it was due to all the practice time we spent building our stamina. I am very excited to work with The Daily model in my class again this year, especially now that I am going to be teaching Grade 3. I am also planning to use all the fabulous strategies I learned during the Guided Math book study, so I can only imagine how independent and self-sufficient (fingers crossed) my little friends will be!!

This year I am moving onto a team that plans together! Yes, we already have our language and math long range plans done for the year. (And they are so pretty...all organized and on a chart!) But none of them had read or used The Daily 5 before. So I handed around my copy, got a few from our resource room and got everyone reading. That being said, a few of my team members use The Power of Retelling as the main part of their reading program. So, I got my hands on a copy and I have been reading that throughout the summer.

The plan is a mishmash of the two models that is ultimately designed with our students in mind. Simple? Ha!

The one things that I need to wrap my head around a little more is using a Monday-Friday schedule. Come from Grade 7-8 I have always taught rotary where I have very little say about when I am teaching which subject. My students would come for 45 minutes, leave and then I would have another class for 45 minutes. My school system works on a Day 1-10 cycle so I was stuck teaching what was schedule for each day...no matter how things may have been going. Now that I teach my own class all the subjects, with very little rotary I have a lot more flexibility to play with my schedule as I see fit. So excited about that!

Here is my basic plan:

 It's a very rough outline.

I think it's going to take a few weeks of working with the 2 models to really see how things go, and to be honest those won't even be the first weeks of school because I have to work through the launching of all the aspects of the Daily 5. Maybe November? :)

I have also decided to call my program "Literacy Workshop". I disliked using the word "daily" last year because we didn't always fit it in everyday. I also don't want a number in the title because I am hoping to incorporate a little media and a responding to reading when I can so our rotation choices will be changing and flexible as the year progresses.

The Power of Retelling uses a "Book of the Week" approach for modelling, teaching, and assessing the students' ability to retell and respond to what they have read. My teaching partners and I have discussed that this would be a good area to incorporate the Daily 5 as we could use vocabulary words during Word Work or a specific writing prompt for Work on Writing. Really, the possibilities are endless. I can also see a lot of possibilities for extending my students' learning during our guided reading groups as I use all the wonderful strategies from our Guiding Readers Bookstudy.

I am very excited about developing my literacy program as the year progresses. I know it will be a lot of work but I think it will be very rewarding for both myself and my students.

The third component of my literacy program will be guided reading and using all of the wonderful strategies that I learned during the Guiding Readers Bookstudy. My one concern is finding and having enough levelled texts to use with my students. This is going to be a goal of mine as soon as I can get back into the school. I want to check out what is available.

Lastly, will be Writer's Workshop. This is always an ongoing project for me. I'm not sure that I've ever really liked my program in the past! I'm hoping this year is better...somehow! Something else to add to my list of goals, I guess. I have always found that the program I used in the past was too cumbersome and too involved somehow. I want to parr things done and make it more simple so that more time is spent writing and less time is spent doing whatever else we did!!

So, to get ready for all these changes in my classroom I have made a few freebies that I thought some of you might enjoy as well.

I've decided to decorate my class using a Dr. Suess theme so I purchased some backgrounds and borders that fit in with my theme for my freebies!

This first freebie is for the book of the week work I will be doing related to The Power of Teaching. It follows along the weekly plan that I laid out above and includes a header for the work to be done on each day.

The second freebie is a Daily 5 inspired set of posters and schedule cards. I've decided to add a few of my own rotations (Respond to Reading and Interact with Media) so that I can be more flexible with my program. Here's a hint of what it contains...

Enjoy!! Don't forget to leave a comment after you've downloaded the freebies.

Daily 5- Word Work Update!! (Freebie)

I am still loving the Daily 5 in my classroom and I am more and more impressed everyday with how well my students work during our Daily 5 time. I do, however, have lots of things I want to change next year in order to make it even better! One thing that I am constantly struggling with is Word Work. I find that my grade 4's are too old for a lot of the hands on type of activities...even though they may really enjoy them. They just don't focus the way younger students do with the tactile activities.

So we first tried a modification of some of the activities I had been seeing on other blogs and Pinterest. I created a bunch of activity cards and bought some plastic chick/eggs (Easter style) for the cards to go into. The students were able to choose a different chick each time that we did our Daily 5 and that's how we practiced our spelling words and worked on our grammar lessons. But.....the students were not very good at making sure the chicks were put away neatly, the cards were always falling out and no one could find the card they were working on from the time before.....le sigh!

What to do? What to do??

Here's my new plan....I created a BINGO board with a variety of spelling and grammar activities based on the language arts expectations for Grade 4 in Ontario. Then I set some point values for "playing" Word Work Bingo! The students are expected to completed at least a straight line, in any direction, for 5 points. After that if they want to complete an X, a box or the whole board they can earn points...plus practice more spelling, vocabulary and grammar.

The best part is...my kids were really into it when I introduced them to it today. They did, however, want to know what the points would be going towards. Mostly, it will be for me to track who is putting forth a great deal of effort to practice their skills but of course, I want to reward the students as well for all their work. I plan to start a classroom economy soon so that my students will be practicing their adding and subtracting decimals/money skills so this seemed like a good time to make a trip for prizes. I went to the dollar store and party packagers after school to stock up on small little trinkets for the prizes. I am also going to add in certificates like "sit in Mrs. Lyons's chair" and homework passes...but naturally that will be worth A LOT of points!!

If you are interested in using my bingo board in your own classroom just click on the image below to get a copy!

I'll be posting each new bingo board so be sure to check back often! I would also LOVE any and all suggestions for other activities to add to future bingo boards.

Thanks for all the comments...in advance of course!!!

The Daily 5...fully loaded!!

It's been about 2 weeks now and my students and I have transitioned into full choice mode of the Daily 5...or as we call it the Daily 3. We have been working on Read to Self, Work on Writing and Convention Connection. I decided to change Word Work to Convention Connection because I wanted to integrate a lot more grammar and not just spelling and vocabulary. Things have been going so well and I have been super proud of my students. On the days when we just can't fit Daily 3 in due to other curriculum expectations from the administration they are asking for it and wishing we could do it!! I love it! Where has this been all my life?

To start off with we reviewed all the I charts we had made throughout the introduction of each part of the Daily 3.

Sorry, the green doesn't come out too well in a picture.

Then we created a Daily 3 Promise for how we would work when we have free choice during the Daily 3...and of course, everyone signed it!

I am hoping to get organized soon so that I can do a great big freebie of the Convention Connection (Word Work) stuff I have been developing for my class but until then...which most likely won't be until after the holidays...you know how it is!!... here are some pictures and descriptions of what we have been working on in class.

To start off with we have been working on nouns and verbs. The students have written stories attempting to use as many nouns and verbs as possible...so fun! Of course, they have done some work on using nouns, conjugating and verbs and identifying the nouns and verbs in sentences. So here came the hard stuff...I posted this list of vocabulary words and the students were required to sort them using a venn diagram into words that could be just nouns, just verbs or both. For some of my 4's this required some real thinking!

Of course, here is the Pinterest inspired Boggle board as bonus work.

This is where the students find all their Convention Connection handouts...and just like the rest of the Daily 5, there is lots of choice! (Please note my super fun Charlie Brown mug in the background!!!)

In other class news, our media-inferring unit is wrapping up and I wanted to share some of the anchor charts we have created and used throughout the unit. We have been learning about inferring in advertising and the features of advertising at the same time. It's been challenging to say the least but from the diagnostic task until now I can really see improvement in most of my Grade 4 friends.

Soon we will be starting Geometry and 2D figures...so as an introduction we reviewed these 4 quadrilaterals and then used them to create Kandinsky style abstract art! Pictures coming soon.

Whew...so much going on at school, at home and with the holidays....8 days to go until vacation. Happy Holidays everyone!

A Look Inside My Classroom

I've taken some updated pictures of my classroom now that we are almost two months into the school year. I started the year with most of my bulletin boards blank so that my students and I could build up our learning materials together with charts and resources that will help them through out the year. Of course it's an ongoing thing and the boards will change as we learn and grow but here's what we have so far...

So these first three pictures are a little hard to see but I'll describe it to you. Each student created a name tag at the beginning of the school year and then I laminated them. I then punched a hole in each card and threaded two twisted pipe cleaners through the hole with a hook on one sad to keep it in the card and a note on the bottom.

Every time my student's finish a book they fill out a short bookmark telling me about their book and then they get to thread a bead on their card. When they reach a multiple of 10 they get an extra special star bead. I have set a goal of 40 books in my class this year after reading The Book Whisperer and doing the book study this summer...but many of my students are going to far surpass that. I think I need to talk to some students about choosing more challenging books! So when that happens I plan to get a third type of bead for the students who have gone beyond the goal.

This is the legend for my word wall. I like to integrate my subjects so this gets students using a legend all year long AND I can put all the words from the subject areas in one place!

Here is my word wall! The "Scrabble" style letters are clip art from Scrappin' Doodles. Love it!

Here is out updated Math board. At the start of the year when we were studying Data Management it had an oversize bar graph on it so we could reference the parts of a bar graph whenever we needed to. We have now moved on to number sense and numeration so the board shows place value information. Above the board you can see our Math Word Wall (which needs to be updated). I put any Math specific vocabulary there.

This is our Work on Writing area. You can see our anchor chart for the types of topics and forms we can write during Work on Writing time. We will continue to add to this chart throughout the year. Underneath you can see the options for what I expect students to do during Work on Writing.

And that's it for now....I plan to re-do my Social Studies board soon and we are starting a new unit on Non-Fiction Text Features and Inferring with Media so keep an eye out for new photos to come!

I would LOVE to hear your thoughts, suggestions or similar ideas. Please comment below, especially with links back to your own blog so I can visit you too!

Writer's Notebook Assignment- Writing Workshop Freebie

Every year I plan to have my students keep a writer's notebook. Every year something everything gets in the way and they fall by the way side...not this year! I started off my Writer's Workshop program following the structure outlined in Denise LeoGrandis' book Launching the Writing Workshop.

Now I will be the first to admit that I have not followed it exactly. I have added in some of my own ideas from past experiences with Writer's Workshop PLUS I am launching the Daily 5 at the same time so that has taken up quite a chunk of class time. (To be totally honest, I am a month and a half into the school year and I am on Day 5 of the plan outlined in the book!! I feel that it's okay since it's working for me and it's my room! I get to make the decisions...LOL)

In terms of the Daily 5 my class is up to 20 minutes for Read to Self (R2S)and 16 minutes for Work on Writing (WoW). During our WoW time the students have been creating an I Am Poem, adding jot notes or long writes (ideas from the book), writing from prompts for the book Unjournaling, or writing of their own choice.

This year I have also added a "Try It" section to my homework board so that any students who are looking for extra practice have some ideas of what they can do. So far the only things I have listed are R2S and adding ideas to their Writer's Notebooks but some of the students have told me that they are doing it every night! Go kids!

I am responsible for covering a variety of text forms each term as part of the plans my Grade 4 team put together- this term we are doing recounts, narratives and reports! However, I also wanted to give my students lots of time to write on topics and in forms of their own choosing...hence, the draw to start the Daily 5 in my room. BUT...I am also responsible for reporting on my student's writing progress. Yeah for marking and report cards.

In order to mesh these two responsibilities I have taken to teaching the text forms during the periods I have dedicated to Writer's Workshop and then allowing the students to write on their own during WoW. I have been very impressed with my student's dedication to writing, conferencing and editing/revising during WoW. Sometimes I feel like I am running a little publishing house out of my classroom! I have created an assignment that will allow my students to showcase their writing while still fulfilling my text form requirements...go me. (As of right now, we have only covered recounts so that's the only text form you will see on the assignment sheet. I am moving on to reports next but the students will be completing an integrated assignment in Science for this text form.)

Now I should preface this assignment sheet/freebie with the fact that I teach in Ontario so the attached rubric has been created using the Ontario Curriculum for Language Arts. Also, we assess using for different categories of achievement- Knowledge and Understanding, Communication, Thinking and Application. These categories are common across all our subject areas and I create my assessments based on these categories. I do not give my students one overall mark on any assignments, but rather they get up to four different marks based on the categories. I am planning to do a post soon on my assessment methods if you are more interested in how this works!

So without further ado..here is my Writer's Notebook Assignment for my Grade 4 class.

If you have any questions or comments please feel free to leave them below or to email me at thinkingofteaching {at} gmail {dot} com. If you are interested in an editable copy of this assignment (without the clip art of course!) please feel free to email me as well!

Building the Routines

I am trying very hard not to stress out....very hard!! Here we are a month into school and I feel as though we are already so far behind. I am implementing the Daily 5 (or 3 in my class) for the very first time. It has been going well and the kids seem to be enjoying it. We are up to 12 minutes for Read to Self and just introduced Work on Writing last week and are up to about 6-ish minutes. So far so good...

The problem comes in because I also have a student teacher in my classroom (which I did not know about until a few days before the start of the year) and I need to balance his learning as well and give him time to teach lessons and learn as well. He is only here for three more weeks and we are building up to full days for him to be teaching but I keep feeling as though my Daily 3 routines and time is getting pushed to the back burner. I want him to have a good practicum and learn as much as possible from teaching in my classroom...BUT...I also want my routines and schedule for the Daily 3 set in place because I am going to be here all year!!!! Such a dilemma.

I would love to hear from anyone else that is implementing the Daily 5 on how fast/slow you are setting up each of the rotations so I can start to judge if I really am going too slow or am on track. HELP PLEASE!!

The Daily Five

...or as it is becoming known in my class, The Daily Three. How did I not do this sooner? This is revolutionizing my teaching and it's only been nine days!

So far we have been working at Read to Self only and our stamina has been built up to 10 minutes. We seem to have hit a small plateau, which is fine, but I am hoping that over the next few weeks we can build up more and more. We have also started Writer's Workshop in our class and have been adding ideas to our Writer's Notebook so that once we get to the point of been able to add Work on Writing to our Daily Three schedule we have ideas to write about a writing routines to draw from. The last part we will add in Word Work a few weeks down the road.

I have also introduced my students to the genre requirement that came about from my reading of The Book Whisperer this summer (see the sidebar for more posts on this great book!) and NOT ONE STUDENT complained about the idea of reading 40 books from a variety of genres. I think this is going to be a great year with my class! We have discussed the characteristics of Poetry, Realistic Fiction, Fantasy and Science Fiction and I really feel that just through our discussions of different genres I am already much closer with my students and know them better as individuals.

Last week I handed out my student's Literacy Journals. These are the notebooks they will use to write about their reading in, to demonstrate their knowledge of the reading strategies we will be covering in class. I have yet to decide how often I will have the students write in these journals and how often I will assessing them, instead choosing to let my class dictate my program. I do want to share our next Literacy Journal activity with you, however....

Through our mini-lessons before Read to Self my class and I have talked about choosing books and using the I PICK strategy outlined in The Daily Five. I have created these bookmarks/question sheets in order to assess my students' understanding of this strategy. I plan to have each student glue one of the strips into their Literacy Journals and answer each of their questions about the book they are currently reading. You could also laminate these and give them to the students to use as bookmarks so they have a constant reference of the strategy as well. Once I have collected their work I will be sure to post some examples so everyone can see how I used this in my class.

If you download these bookmarks/question sheets for use in your room please comment below with how you plan to use them so we can continue to pay the ideas forward!!

Three Days Down...187 More to Go!

Well, I am starting to feel like I actually have my feet under me and can take a moment to blog about my first week back at work. I am really enjoying my class, they are super cute and really eager to learn it seems. Implementing Read to Self as part of my Daily Three (adapted from Daily 5) is going fabulously! I even had a boy today ask if he could take his book home because in the past all he ever did was play video games but now he wants to read at home....aww, my little heart just about burst!

I have taken some pictures to show you what we have been up to in Grade 4 these past 3 days.

'

The three ways to read a book and our stamina count...already up to 5 minutes!

This is hanging above our carpet area. We brainstormed appropriate carpet behaviours and create the I chart outlined in The Daily 5 for the start of Read to Self.

Here is my behaviour clip chart in action. So far there haven't been any moves down the chart and I have been trying to really emphasize the good things students have been doing.

I like to allow my students to have input into the classroom rules so what we did what brainstorm what each rule might look like and sound like in our room. The students each had a marker and walked around in a gallery walk and added their own ideas to each poster. I asked that they try to write an idea on at least 4 of the 6  posters and if their idea was already on the poster then they could repeat it because it must be important. Tomorrow we are going to add some other ideas that I want on the charts that weren't added by students and then the charts will be laminated and kept in the room for the year!

This was my first math lesson of the year. In the top right of the picture you can see the data table we created my collecting the birthdays of the class. We then took that data and created a bar graph of our class' birthdays. The students reviewed important terms such as x-axis, y-axis, labels, titles, and scale. This will stay up for the rest of our data management unit so that the students can reference it as we work on other data management skills.

And...I already received my first drawing from a student which I promptly hung up by my favourite poster!

Tomorrow we are doing a pretty complicated art lesson that I am excited about and my student teacher is finally arriving! Plus, it's FRIDAY!!

The Book Whisperer Genre Tally

I have redone my genre tally sheet...again! I think this is the last time, especially since school starts on Tuesday. I realized as I went through my classroom library that I actually only had one book I could classify as science fiction and I didn't want to have an entire science fiction requirement when I couldn't really offer those books to my students. I am hoping to start building on my science fiction collection and hopefully have more to offer my students in the future. If you would like to take a look at my new genre tally sheet head on over here.

The next step is decide when to introduce the genre requirement. I am going to concentrate on getting Read to Self (from The Daily 5) underway during the first week of school and then if all is going well I will start to add in a little about the genres as mini-lessons each day. I am also hoping to sprinkle in some the CAFE stuff as well. My student teacher sure is going to get an education is starting a new program based on professional reading as I attempt to implement my reading from all three resources this summer!!

For all you who joined in for the Book Whisperer read along this summer I am curious about how toy plan to introduce and integrate the genre requirement into your literacy program. Sooner? Later? Still undecided? Please share your thoughts!!

Integrating Daily 5 and CAFE

I have been sitting here on my couch going back and forth, back and forth, back and forth between the Daily 5 and the CAFE books trying to figure out how to launch the "programs" (I hesitate to use the word program but I can't think of anything else because it's almost 10 o'clock on a Friday night) at the same time.
Do people just switch back and forth between the 2 launch schedules provided? Try to do both Day 1's on the first day of school? Pick and choose here and there??
